Influence circles
Every base and group has a circle of influence: the area it watches over and defends.
The circle around a base or a group is its reach. Bigger groups and bigger bases reach further.
When the circles of two enemies overlap, a battle begins, as long as one of them has something it can hit. Standing armies, fleets and bases also hold the land and resources inside their circles.
The map draws them by what they do: bases as soft domes, standing groups with a solid ring, moving groups with a dashed one and aircraft with a dotted one.
